The Heart of West Virginia (22)

This morning we filled up at the continental breakfast and used the hotel computer before resuming our journey. The first 20 miles were on the West Fork Trail, which was our favorite bike path so far.

We thought we would be able to continue for another 10 miles on a bike path, but apparently a nearby zinc plant had recently been shut down, and the area needed to be decontaminated.  After 30 miles we stopped for lunch at Sheetz, for a smorgasbord of items taken to go from continental breakfast and a few from the store itself.

We try to remember to oil our chains every day or two.

The afternoon included some quiet sections along a river.

At the end of the day we stopped for groceries at the Shop ‘n Save, including donuts which Rachel strapped onto the back of her bike.

We finally managed to arrive at our destination at a reasonable hour. This time, it was at Broken Wheel Campground in Weston, WV, which is known as “The Heart of West Virginia”.

There’s also a historic looney bin in Weston!

It’s getting more and more fun to tell people where we started and to look at the map to see how far we’ve come!

  1. Haha! The asylum is open for all major holidays (thank goodness!). . Sounds like that bike path was a lot of fun

  2. Oh my gosh!!! Weston is where my mom is from!! My grandmother used to work at the “state hospital”…. now called the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. Faith & I took a tour of it last summer. And remember meeting my Aunt Elladene & Uncle Gene? (how could you forget??) …. that’s where they live …. not at the asylum, but in Weston.

    1. No way!!! That is so cool! What a fun place; it’s really neat to have seen where your mom and family are from!
