This morning, we had an odd assortment of things for breakfast, including leftover Oreos and hot dogs. We would have loved to watch the news, but there was no cable in this motel. Rachel finally changed her tire that had been slowly leaking since a few days prior; a piece of wire was the culprit again. We’ve only bought a few new tubes over the course of the trip, so we each have a tube or two with a lot of patches!

The Sierras (83)
Today, we had some exciting and intimidating activities to look forward to. One of the primary reasons that we wanted to enter California so far south was so that we could experience the giant Sequoia trees. In order to get to them, though, we had to climb up to over 7,000 feet again.
We stopped for some coffee and muffins in Kernville this morning. It seems like a cool little town, with plenty of eateries, inns, and small shops catering to outdoor sports enthusiasts. The Kern River appears to be a great spot to fish, raft, and kayak.
No Walkers (82)
The air conditioning was not working at the hotel, which made it difficult to sleep before 10PM. That did not bode well for us, since we had to wake up at midnight. In addition, I awoke to a flat rear tire which I had to patch before we could leave.
I struggled to keep my eyes open for the first hour, until we started climbing. Soon after, the sun started shining, which helped wake us up.
The Land of Fruit and Nuts (81)
As we left Barstow this morning, Rachel was having bad flashbacks to Kentucky. All of the dogs we passed were harassing her, but, luckily, there was only one on the loose, and it was deterred by our bright, flashing lights.
16th State (80)
We awoke at 11pm with the goal of riding between midnight and 10am, while the temperature was below 90F. This might have been possible, had we not gone down into the casino for breakfast and iced coffees at IHOP. Afterwards, we returned to the room and watched The Late Show while packing up.
